I was far over-trained to perform 98 percent of the tasks that I eventually did. All of this was an orgy of self-gratification. I loved being super trained, super smart, 150 percent more competent than I needed to be. The tragedy was that I did not see my children grow up.
Bush never treated his base as contemptuously as Obama deals with liberals. He responded to tax cut criticism by dismissing his critics as sanctimonious and fixated on purist policymaking. This unproductive response is part of a trend.
We'll have lots of time to examine Obama's new course before he actually formally announces it next year. In the meantime, Obama has two short months remaining to convince the Senate to get something done to bolster his legacy.
