Teen romance, supernatural powers, a love between a human and a witch -- it is all present in the new film Beautiful Creatures. Still there is something lacking that makes this cast an unlikely successor to the fans of the Twilight series.

The writer and director here is Richard LaGravenese, raising the question: Can the man who was an Oscar nominee for The Fisher King and has garnered praise for his screenplays for A Little Princess and Beloved, among others, bring a similar intelligence to a teen-oriented romance?

Beautiful Creatures is wonderfully wrought, funny, smart and enchanting, the best film I've seen thus far this year. Indeed, it's a tale of young love set in a milieu torn between the status quo and the supernatural.

So much of Beautiful Creatures is so unexpectedly terrific that it's almost a tragedy when the picture eventually falls victim to its own plot.

Based on the first in a series of books by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl, Beautiful Creatures (opening Thursday) hopes the "Twihards" can shift their focus from the undead to the magically endowed.

Another daring redefinition of the family film from the people who turned a near-dialogue-free tale about a love-struck robot, an adventure about a cantankerous, air-bound septuagenarian, and a fantasy about a culinary-obsessed rat into worldwide, critical and commercial hits?

Amazing. A feminist cartoon and a joy to behold. The visual mixed media almost makes this 3D viewing come right off the screen into your lap and your heart.

Why, ten years after an underperforming sequel, is there a Men In Black 3? Are there burning questions about agents J (Smith) and K (Tommy Lee Jones) that were left unresolved? Is there an arch-nemesis still on the loose?

It's a raucous, rollicking ride, as visually stunning -- in truly sensational 3D -- as it is hilarious and exciting. The Oscars, which usually lean Heavy and Significant, really should launch a category for Funnest Picture.
