Back in Newt's heyday, Doonesbury portrayed Gingrich as a lit bomb with a short fuse. Right and Left seem to be in agreement on his resemblance to trinitrotoluene (or "Newtroglycerine"?). Which leaves only one key question: When will this "Newtsplosion" take place?

Why did the guy who promised to change the whole system bring in the guys who are most wedded to the system? Why does Barack Obama love the establishment so much?

The purge began when Obama got elected. One by one even mainstream Republicans have adopted more radical language and attitudes in an attempt to survive politically.

It's profoundly naive to expect politicians and mainstream media to fix things. Why is a television anchor making hundreds of thousands of dollars a year going to look to change the system? He loves the system. The system pays the bills.

My advice to incumbents is: choose to embrace asymmetrical politics; choose the courageous politics of bridge building over the vapid politics of personal destruction. In the months ahead, I'm hoping for the former and bracing myself for the latter.
