When something breaks and we make mistakes (little or big), we're no better than the people who distribute fake images on Twitter and spread rumors on Facebook. We're better than this.
Thanks to the publication of suspicion, though, our campus has been subjected to national mockery. At least some local news outlets got their five seconds of fame.
The Newsroom is a kind of romantic screwball comedy, and it succeeds well on that level. But more importantly, the show reminds us that the press is the immune system of democracy and that serious news requires serious ethical practice like checking the facts, no matter how dangerous.
