Placing a loved one in a nursing facility is a highly controversial issue. Many people would rather die than do it. But in some -- not all -- cases, such placement may actually be the best solution for the patient.

The caregiver may have promised his or her loved one many years before to never put them in any kind of facility for any reason. Breaking that promise would be extraordinarily difficult.
I do know that as major treatment centers start to move away from abstinence-based treatment, what I -- and many people I know and love -- received when we were desperate for help is in jeopardy.
