My path to spirituality is to hardwire the right choices into my life -- on purpose. And the right choice is the one which causes the least violence in the world.

This long-overdue affirmation of secular students' place within an otherwise predominantly religious institution owes largely to precisely the kind of interfaith dialogue and collaboration that encourages mutual respect and solidarity between atheists and the religious, rather than scorn or derision.

I have spent the past several years visiting seminaries and divinity schools around the country in an effort to better understand them and find ways to strengthen them. What I have discovered is a contrast of great challenges and powerful hope.

This week, after we talk about the difference between the Jewish, Catholic and Protestant Bibles, we'll settle down for our first party of the year: Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year. I know my calendar is out of whack, but we have 10 weeks to learn the whole Bible, so we can't be picky (or even correct).

A year from now, let's have more than 100 congregations and other groups follow Wesley Seminary's lead and gather folks around the table for food, fellowship and conversation.

Universities have become special and privileged settings where faith practice, learning and dialogue can take place in a context that requires mutual respect and where students of many nations can come better to appreciate the values of religious pluralism and freedom.

At the seder, I will not absent-mindedly read the text, but will recite it emphatically with intention. As long as others are enslaved, I am a slave. Until we all are free, I am not fully free.
