I am hopeful that the combination of an unprecedented female leadership in Congress and the opportunity for our own voices to break through will make sure women's rights and status in society are fully equal to men's and truly secure all over the world.
Rather than standing down, women are stepping forward in greater numbers than ever -- as activists, as donors, and as candidates. In fact, 2012 is actually poised to be a historic year for women candidates.
If all or even most of this class of women senators were to win in 2012, it would be historic, easily the highest quality group of new women senators ever. Progressives should do everything we can to rally behind them and help carry them to victory.
Since women's political fate tends to be tied to the political fate of Democrats overall, next year's elections pose a very real threat to some of the most powerful pro-woman, pro-choice voices in Congress.
