Feminist Coming Out Day rises above the stigma and contradictions that muddle so many conversations on sexism, and the power of the event lies in its one simple assertion that feminism is pertinent today.

Some people think we already have equality. Many young women feel the label of "feminist" is, at best, irrelevant to their lives and, at worst, a stigma to be avoided at all costs. Nothing could be further from the truth.

The problem with using the singular brand name "feminism" is akin to using the word "women": It's too big, too vast to cover all the people who either consider themselves some kind of feminist or who are engaging in "feminist" acts.

While feminists made "woman" a hard and fast rule, could it be time to reopen the case? Could we be coming to a time when we need to reclaim "girl" to embrace all of the woman that we are?

The modern "Gay Rights Movement" has had and still has racism, classism, misogyny, ageism, and trans-phobia at its core.
