If a filibuster happens in the forest and no one is told about it, did it really happen? The GOP is said to be ready to filibuster the bill extending jobless benefits today. Will this be reported as the national emergency that it is?
I do not oppose criticism of the President, his goals or his methods. But I do not want him or his administration to fail, which is what I sense the conservatives, the Republicans and the Tea Party seek.
Would we today have laws on drug safety, auto safety, campaign finance ceilings without Sherri Finkbein, GM's detective tailing Ralph Nader, Watergate and Goldman Sachs? Are scandals to Congress what oxygen is to life?
The fact is the federal government isn't "broken" because of the filibuster rules. It's broken because of its two Senators per State structure, regardless of population, that is built into the U.S. Constitution.
The continued abuse of Senate rules is the kind of business-as-usual Washington politics that so frustrates the American people. Our rules are broken and we need to fix them, and I have offered a simple proposal -- the Constitutional Option.
