Despite -- and perhaps because of -- stark budget realities, we must have the political will and discipline to support the humanities. Let's aim for funding of the National Endowment for the Humanities at the FY10 level of $167.5 million.
Adding to the usual budget chaos in Washington this time of year is not one, but two budgets. Yes, Congress is still trying to settle FY2011 funding levels.
Let's address our deficit problems and even balance the budget, if that's what makes sense. But let's not do it at the expense of the health and well-being of our nation's children.
We need to get our priorities right: to invest in babies ahead of bankers and to make tough choices based on real national security needs -- our human capital.
