Vanessa Mártir | Posted 11.18.2014 | Gay Voices
Vanessa Mártir

As a girl, I was exposed to different religions. Mom was a Jehovah's Witness for some time before she met Millie when I was two. Of course Mom was excommunicated when it was revealed that she was with a woman

Alex Davidson

You might think a gay stay-at-home Dad in San Francisco would be surrounded by others in similar situations - I did. But more often that not I was reminded of how rare a species I was - oftentimes I was the only gay dad anywhere.

It is LGBTQ History Month, which got me thinking about my own history. When I came out to my mother her struggle was largely based on worrying what the neighbors would think.

Religion aside, I firmly believe that those who argue that homosexuality is a choice do so in order to justify senseless beatings of gays and lesbians, and continued discrimination and mistreatment against them. I also believe without a doubt that it is a choice to be a nasty human being.

Becoming Travolta (Queer Fat Femmes in a World Without Role Models)

Kimberly Dark

It's not that I'm interested in being a guy, or taking on a romantic role other than my own, but Travolta is part of my adolescent history. He's really the only male actor I've imitated with any regularity -- and I became Travolta across a range of characters.

My Abusive Relationship: My Metamorphosis

Lani Buess

I questioned why I continued to stay. Was it habit? Some sadistic sense of comfort? Did I think we'd change back into the people we once were? I'm not a weak person. I grew up in such a loving home. My parents have a beautiful marriage. What's wrong with me?

The Cause of Homosexuality Is Irrelevant

Mark Baer | Posted 11.18.2014 | Gay Voices
Mark Baer

Many people seem fixated on the fact that the actual cause of homosexuality has not yet been established with any degree of certainty. As someone who likes to understand the reasons things occur, I respect and appreciate the curiosity. However, the ultimate result remains the same, regardless of whether the cause is genetic, environmental, or some combination of the two.

The Problem With the '75 Percent of Lesbians Are Fat' Statistic

Jodi Savitz | Posted 11.15.2014 | Gay Voices
Jodi Savitz

As long as this statistic is being touted as a scientifically proven fact, we have a problem. It is daily espousing a condescending correlation between lesbian identity and unhealthy weight. This notion is and will continue to affect the physical and emotional well-being of many a queer girl, both young and old.

The Same-Sex Marriage 'Debate' Is Based Upon Ignorance and Inaccurate Information

It seems as though Judge Feldman allowed his own prejudices get in the way of his duties as a judicial officer. He showed his ignorance by making such comparisons and referring to homosexuality as a 'lifestyle choice.'

Are Too Many People Writing Poetry?

Julie R. Enszer

Poetry is a cacophony of voices. I want more people to write poems, especially queer people, feminists, and people of color. For too long LGBT voices, feminist voices, and voices of people of color have been excluded or eluded from literary cultures and canons.

Its intention is to help more women realize that their feelings regarding their sexual orientation are legitimate and that they are not alone.

How a Feminist Lens Failed Me

You see, when it came to women, I didn't have a clear standard to measure their advances. I couldn't reconcile the fact that these were women. Our culture teaches us how to defend ourselves against male aggressors but these same-sex threats were too alien.

When I heard about his latest book, I decided that it was time to read Edmund White. As a lesbian writer, I have very little in common with White, but as I kept reading Inside a Pearl, what I found was an Edmund White I could relate to -- one who could lay his life on the page.

As LGBT youth, adults and families know all too well, bullying isn't confined to just the playground, classroom, or cafeteria -- it can happen to anyone, anywhere. And as my wife and I prepare for the birth of our first child, we have to learn when negative actions become a teaching moment.

Love makes the world go round. And when it comes to LGBT civil rights, love is what all the fuss is all about. Two recent books from Cleis Press (both published in 2013) brought the idea of love to the forefront of my mind, in very different ways.

When exactly did folks begin using the bible as an excuse to hate everyone who isn't white, Christian, male and straight? I mean, if I should be killed simply because I'm gay and the bible said so then surely they should meet that same fate for their actions right?!
