At a time when domestic and global problems pose serious threats to the United States, the Republican Party has become the party not only of "less government", but of active hostility to the very idea of government itself.
The Supreme Court has ruled. But, in a democracy, citizens rule. We can do that by working with and through responsible elected officials who are committed to reclaiming America for the electorate rather than the elite.
Washington was correct in recognizing that the United States would soon become a melting pot. He might not have foreseen how quickly the country would evolve multi-culturally and multi-racially, nor approved of it, but he apparently understood that the "intermixture" was inevitable.
So as we celebrate another day off and think of fireworks, hot dogs, and all the rest, let's give some thought to how and why this country was founded. And consider how far we have to go in meeting challenges that would daunt even the best of the Founders.
