Gods Love

As we begin our religious observances this week, I hope that we will keep in mind the Maureens and Megans among us: dear to God even in death, but so deserving of a life of here on earth.

The problem for people of Christian faith is that there really aren't very many good answers to the question of "why" in the Bible.

When we use the word "love," what exactly are we talking about? This is complex and confusing territory, for sure.

If God is beautiful, then there is nothing truly beautiful but God. And if God is loving, then no one truly loves but he.

What is at the very heart of human desires? To be loved. And isn't it interesting that according to Christian teachings, love for us is the emotional core of the risen Jesus, the one who dwells in human hearts and hears the prayers of little children?

God is not a force who acts on the world through coercion, violence or the suspension of physics and free will. God is a verb, an action we bring to the world to make love, justice, mercy, joy and goodness known.

when stock markets crash, when oil spills into the ocean, when wars spin out of control, and yes, when marriage vows are broken, we do well to remember that God's love is our rock.
