President Obama said at his news conference Tuesday, "I continue to believe that we've got to close Guantanamo." He then added, "Congress determined that they would not let us close it." Unfortunately, the president's comments are misleading.
The media are not the only culprit here. We, the electorate, deserve a substantial part of the blame. Because most of us don't pay serious attention to much of anything that's going on in the world or in our country.
Decisions about placement of prisoners are made based on their level of compliance. It has nothing to do with alleged terrorist activities or crimes, since no one -- you got it -- no one has been convicted of anything.
Abdul Rahman al-Amri committed suicide in Guantánamo after been held without charge or trial for five and a half years. He said his intent was to fight for a cause he believed in as a Muslim toward jihad, not to fight against the Americans.
