As a third generation Coloradan, I'm confident this is neither the vision nor the image of Colorado the vast majority carry in their hearts. However, the question now is; what are we willing to do about it?
Is the United States of America a country where guns come before books? Arming teachers represents a major step in advancing our cultural arms escalation. Consider: Teachers aren't "supposed to be" soldiers or law enforcement officers.
What's needed are policies that address the underlying social, cultural, and mental health factors that drive gun violence, with the understanding that these issues vary from one region of the country to another.
As individuals, we are responsible for our choices, especially the choice to kill. But something in our collective heart appears diseased. We cling to guns, it seems, more tightly than we cling to God.
