Everything changed when the doctors discovered that the pain in my wrist wasn't a sprain. The doctors told me I never would do gymnastics again. Both my world and my Olympic dream came crashing down in that doctors' office.
Once in the land of opportunity, you better take from it what it has to offer. And take she did. Earning a BA degree from Yale University, and JD from Columbia Law School, she made her parents proud by honoring their request for her to become a lawyer.
Instead of investing in this incredible source of human potential, we have closed the doors to them. Our society has continued to cast undocumented youth aside, and set them up for failure. Yet they continue to defy these odds.
Although Gabby was the winner, I couldn't stop thinking about Dominique Dawes, and how she paved the way for Gabby and started my obsession with Olympic Sport. Gabby also closed a chapter in my life. She won the Gold Medal that I wanted Dominique to win.
