Why did countries lend to Haiti in the first place, if poor countries have such a hard time repaying their debts even without natural disasters? Should they lend again?

There is a quickly growing movement to forgive Haiti's $1 billion in outstanding debt and to insure that aid to earthquake victims takes the form of grants, not more loans.

Today's announcement that we're waiving all debt payments from Haiti for the next 5 years is only a small sliver of our much larger commitment to Haiti.

Since the earthquake, I have wanted nothing more than to go to Haiti to help, hold, and comfort my family and other survivors. But since I can't, I'm instead fighting for Haiti's old debts to be excused.
