My Mother's Legacy
It is impossible to overstate the impact of the loss of a beloved family member. But as great as the loss was, the impact of my mother's life was even greater.

Forces calling for health care reform are gaining momentum. But if by "reform," they simply mean "universal coverage," I have to disagree.
Do not get caught up with all of the hoopla about steeping time and water temperature -- just get to it.
On World AIDS Day, we need to remember those we have lost, but we also need to remember the 39.5 million individuals and households that are also affected by and with HIV.
Instead of spending money on more band-aids, a revised Constitution with a health care amendment would give direction to a unique American purpose and, over time, solve an historic problem.
We must fight for all Americans to be treated equally on every single level of their lives -- and this must include health care. We must fight every single day for this change.
In an earlier post we commented on positive aspects of the relationship between Michelle and Barack Obama. Fresh from having watched their recent 60 M...
When he assumes power, Barack Obama will take the reigns of the largest, sustained commitment of any nation to lifesaving HIV treatments for some of the world's most impoverished citizens.
Of course we don't want to distract energy from the fight against Prop 8's vicious proponents - but if we don't deal with these issues, rising HIV levels and the possibility of super-AIDS will deal with us.
On the 20th anniversary of World AIDS Day, despite the medical advances that have been made, this story serves as a powerful reminder of the struggles and indignities people living with HIV/AIDS still face.
Of all the things that I have seen, of all the conversations, of all the meetings, I wanted to share with you today the one thing that sticks in my mind, and keeps me awake at night.

For years now, scientists at the Centers for Disease Control and elsewhere have said that autism is probably a purely genetic disorder. Those days are over now.
NPR announced that it had fired psychiatrist Frederick Goodwin. Goodwin was released after NPR learned that he had received at least $1.3 million from drug companies between 2000 and 2007.
If you wouldn't eat your cat, you shouldn't eat a turkey. As poultry scientist Tom Savage says, "I've always viewed turkeys as smart animals with personality and character, and keen awareness."

Give me a voluptuous, olive skinned Selma Hayek or Jennifer Lopez any ole day over these vampires
Pale is IN, but NOT looking like 3 days DEAD!
In the 19th century "pale" skin was a mark of the upper classes only because it meant that the individual did not have to perform long hours of hard field labor under a harsh sun. As outfoor sports (i.e. tennis, etc.) became a staple of the country club set, this was reversed and tans became a status symbol. I think that today it's largely a matter of choice whether to tan or remain "pale." For me, the first consideration is skin health and avoidance of sun damage while managing to get enough for a little vitamin D.
The women pictured in the slideshow are fair-skinned and lovely, but not "pale." I'm a light-skinned "black" woman from a family of many colors, all of them beautiful. "Pale" denotes sickly, unhealthy looking, or ashen. I urge all my friends, whether dark or fair, not to abuse their skins with too much UV radiation in the quest for a tan or in any other way, because God already gave them a color palette that looks good on them. The most beautiful skin is healthy skin regardless of hue. I'm a portrait artist and the skin color range of the human family is wonderful to behold. I've seen great beauties with lovely skins ranging from polished ebony to flawless alabaster and everything in between.
Nature has the tendency to pick out your best color to begin with. A light-skinned person trying to darken their skin is just as foolish as a dark-skinned person trying to lighten theirs. I've consciously guarded my pallor for years because I'd rather be a soft-skinned old woman someday instead of a leathery one. You look fine as you are - don't change a thing!
