I enjoy reading well-written books where there are earth-shattering secrets, a race against the clock, harrowing twists and turns, lives constantly under threat. But I don't have an itch to create one.
Collins's timely trilogy makes it clear that the 1%, having created a system of deeply embedded cruelty, should go, something highlighted by the surly defiance of heroine Katniss Everdeen who refuses to be disposed of.
The Hunger Games have been popular with people who do not read books. A friend of mine (who made sure to emphasize that he doesn't read) told me that he loved the series and that I had to stop what I was doing to read it.
