Americans, whether they are gun-toting conservatives from Texas or hipster liberals from New York, mostly want the same things. In this era of political polarization and gridlock, I find that an extremely comforting thought.

For a nation where one of the core tenets is a presumption of innocence until proven guilty, we have sure lost the ability to give anyone the benefit of the doubt.
But who is Troy Davis? Who is this man who has stirred many to action, yet is unable to speak to directly to the media himself? And how can all of us come to see his plight as our own?
People constantly complain to me about news coverage of criminal cases. "What happened to the presumption of innocence?" they ask at almost every turn. Well, I'm tired of it.
He may be guilty of the federal charges, but the outrageous manner in which he is being attacked by the legislature this week is just too unfair.
