Was Afghanistan not major enough for him? It almost reminds you of when Rumsfeld was not impressed with invading Afghanistan because it did not provide a rich enough target environment.
Robert Scheer, 07.23.2008
Both candidates are embracing, rather than challenging, the fundamental irrationality of Bush's "war on terror," which substitutes hysteria for rational analysis in appraising the dangers the country faces.
Amb. Marc Ginsberg, 07.25.2008
From Kabul to Baghdad to Jerusalem, in Berlin and now in Paris, Obama's conduct abroad has earned him the right to be considered a respected presumptive commander-in-chief.
Earl Ofari Hutchinson, 07.19.2008
Obama's Afghan appearance won't stop the criticism from foes that he doesn't know enough about fighting and winning a war, and that his credential as a tough guy on the war against terrorism is suspect.
Kathleen Reardon, 07.21.2008
Berating women who are still supporting for vice president a candidate who won half the Democratic presidential nominee votes is not the way to persuade them to support Obama.
Paul Rieckhoff, 07.22.2008
Our military officials felt brave enough to send our troops into battle, and yet not one of them has the strength of character to look Pat's mother, Mary Tillman, in the face, and say they are sorry.
Jamal Dajani, 07.20.2008
Don't keep insisting to the Arabs that you're not a Muslim. They already know that, and they don't care.
Lionel Beehner, 07.21.2008
Let's call these missions what they are: photo ops and ways of gathering impressions, opinions, and assumptions from various sources on the ground. Let's leave the fact-finding to Google.
Medea Benjamin, 07.24.2008
Both Obama and McCain are advocating the exact same "solution" in Afghanistan: more troops -- Yet sending more troops will only mean more violence. And it's also not enough to simply say "Troops Out Now."
William Bradley, 07.22.2008
With the eyes of the world, and the U.S. media, trained intently on Obama during his week-long tour of the Middle East and Europe, for McCain, there is the question of what to do while all this is going on.
Michael Shaw, 07.20.2008
Seeing Obama in front of American troops at Bagram is not only a great relief (and, hopefully, a preview), it offers a profound contrast with what we've been suffering from.
Bob Burnett, 07.24.2008
The presumptive Democratic nominee's world tour etablished that Obama has the gravitas to become President of the United States and neutralized McCain's national security credentials.
Adele Stan, 07.19.2008
A few hours into his journey to the two key lands occupied by American troops, Barack Obama is feeling the love. Indeed, it seems as if leaders in bo...

It is one thing to masterfully run a primary campaign, and quite another to travel to three of the world's hottest conflict zones, each with its own unique challenges.
Chris Weigant, 07.25.2008
Be careful what you wish for, John.
That seems to be the message of the week for Senator John McCain. He took some campaign consultant's idea a few w...
Joe Galloway, 07.25.2008
Bush and McCain had barely completed even one Iraq victory lap singing hosannas to the surge when they were obliged to begin thinking and talking about how they're going to shore up a failing policy in Afghanistan.

As usual they start out by calling people in other places "names" then proclaim them enemy . And as usual we swallow these mind diversion tactics and get in line with the rest the gang . If we would stop and ask ourselves why are we over there getting killed , wounded , and killing and wounding those people ?
BIG OIL WANTED A PIPE LINE THROUGH AFGHANISTAN AND THE TALIBAN SAID NO .
This goes back more than a decade . Big Oil told the corporate media to break out the mind control machinery and spin us in to a new thought area . Please think ! There are more people in that part of the world than in our country and if we come to our senses we would send only the instigators there .
Dr. Zbigniew Brzezinski has been, for quite some time, both through his numerous writings and public appearances, a calming voice of deep experienced-based insight and reason. His appearance earlier this year on Charlie Rose on PBS where he shared views with Mr. Rose and Henry Kissinger (who offered an alternative stance) was absolutely absorbing. It was a full hour of actual intelligent respectful conversation without raised voices or simultaneous prolonged outbursts of rudeness; quite unlike what presently passes muster on much of the airwaves out there in vacuum land. Dr. Brzezinski just might be "the voice of he who cryeth out in the wilderness".
WATCH CHARLIE WILSON'S WAR!!!!! TRUE STORY, CONGRESSMAN FROM TEXAS AND A VERY WEALTHY WOMAN FROM TEXAS HELP PUSH US INTO SUPPORTING THE MUJAHDEEN AGAINST THE SOVIETS. Osama Bin Laden was living in Peshwar in 1980. The Saudi Royal Family would send money to OBL to support his charitable causes in Afghanistan. READ THE BOOK,
The Osama Bin Ladens by Steve Coll. You will find how much the Bush Family, Reagan, and the
Saudi Royal Family have in common. Oh and a local young man from Seatlle died 7/13/08 in Afghanistan along with 8 other US Soldiers. Did anybody really hear about it?
200 Taliban against 70 US and Afghan soldiers. There was limited air power and he mentioned to his dad that things were getting intense over there.
Here is the link:

Our soldiers were out numbered 4 to1, hand to hand combat, the Taliban had small arms fire and rocket propelled grenades........Now read the book The Osama Bin Ladens by Steve Coll.
PS Pakistan, India, Have the Bomb!!
The Z man is right about Afghanistan, but Obama isn't going to keep us bogged down in a fight there. He needs to say some macho crapola to get elected is all.
What we need to fear is war against Iran before Bush leaves. They know McCain isn't going to win this one. They know Obama isn't going to sanction a war on Iran. They know Iran can get a nuke fairly soon. This is the last shot for the oil men to get back that oil. With oil going for what it is, it's never been more valuable either.
Watch the economy. We're on the brink of world wide banking crisis. If we have one, you'll see a draft and war v. Iran. It allows gov't to direct spending, employs vast numbers of people who would be unemployed otherwise and acts as an economic stimulus for companies like GM Ford GE etc. The economy will decide this. The neo cons and oil men want war in Iran...they just need a pretext.
Easiest way to cut funding is to legalize drugs. Excellent new source of excise taxes as well. Are we not free to eat what we want? The gov't should only be advising, keeping labeling standards and such.
