Yentl, the Yeshiva Boy: A Modern Transgender Hero

As a young trans girl growing up as a yeshiva boy in Queens, New York, I found that this play resonated deeply within me. The eponymous Yentl, who goes by the name Anshel as a yeshiva boy, challenges the gender norms of that extinct European world of the Jewish Pale and its predominantly Orthodox Jewish communities.

After having faithfully and meritoriously served in the armed forces of these United States for 20 years, suddenly I am not a real American, just because I am not a Republican -- or a member of the Tea Party?

I have always been fascinated by the end-time believers. I envy their strong faith and certainty, as well as their flexibility when the believed date of doom passes without even a small locust infestation.

I have never really had ill feelings towards Katy and I am happy to not be the "Kissed a Girl" girl anymore. But her teen fangirls portrayed me as an angry, jealous "gramma" starved for publicity.

This week, I spent a couple of great days at Walt Mossberg and Kara Swisher's annual D: All Things Digital conference. Among the highlights: watching Jill Sobule sing about Rupert Murdoch -- in front of Rupert Murdoch, and Facebook's Sheryl Sandberg levitate around the conference after securing a $200 million investment from the Russians. The breakout star was new Yahoo! CEO Carol Bartz -- and not just because of her perfectly timed F-bomb on the D7 stage. She was a quote machine: "Down 15 percent is the new flat" and "You can't take nine women and make a baby in one month; there is a process" were among my favorites. But the line of the week came from Martha Stewart who told me over lunch: "While Bernie Madoff was on his rampage, the SEC was busy pursuing me." For more on the conference, click here.

I Kissed a Girl

Apparently, the only place you can see a girl kissing another girl on MTV nowadays is on The Real World after six tequila shots in the hot tub. Certainly not in the video called, um, "I Kissed a Girl."
