Before my political awakening the Fourth was a fun day of barbecue, games, and fellowship with family and friends. Now, I reflect upon this nation's refusal to live up to the syrupy platitudes about liberty and sacrifice our political leaders will serve us like so many hot dogs.
My love for and devotion to our country goes back to incidents in my childhood, my service in World War II, and my involvement since 1980 in fighting those who would have us believe that people are good Christians or bad ones depending on their political points of view.
President Barack Obama's recent announcement giving the children of illegal immigrants the opportunity to work and the outraged reaction of the GOP made me step back and think "what makes someone an American?" Is it an accident of birth? Or is it an attitude?
Like our founding fathers, today's guardians of freedom continually apply their sweat and blood to preserve this as the land of the free and home of the brave. Daily, they are making a difference in the lives of so many Americans.
