Most Americans are not Muslim. And most Americans do not work for our government. So, like any minority, they're easy to pick on. Who's gonna mind? Thomas Jefferson and James Monroe would.
The politics of fear in America has created a dangerous blind spot in our national security. That was on vivid display today Peter King's hearings on the "extent of radicalization in the American Muslim community."
The point is not to use their tactics, but to use their arguments to highlight their hypocrisy and to prevent these tactics (and all the harm they cause) from being used in the future.
With the bigoted King hearings, many courageous Americans have begun to push back against efforts to target the entire American Muslim community. They include Christian clergy, law enforcement officials and civil rights leaders.
The unit consists of seven members, not all Muslim, doing everything from internal education within the LAPD about Islam and Muslim culture to community education on issues like domestic violence and hate crimes.
By marginalizing a religious minority, King is sending a dangerous message to the Muslim community and the entire populous that runs counter to the very foundation of our nation.
I know what Muslim-American interpreters and soldiers are doing for their country -- some are now buried in Arlington National Cemetery. Representative King's words are an insult to those heroes.
