In the media blitz last year over Michael Heizer's 340-ton rock fragment sculpture (Levitated Mass), clichés never had it so good. Journalists just couldn't resist: "Art is in the Eye of the Boulder," "There is a New Rock Star in L.A.," "Rock of Ages," "I Am a Rock, I Am an Island." So where to begin?

A friend of mine said that she thinks the main reasons for LACMA's swarm of weekend museum-goers these days, can be attributed to easy parking and lots of nice outdoor hang-out space. Me? I think it's because of the spectacular attractions.

Obviously the braces are necessary to prevent the rock from shifting in the case of an earthquake, but couldn't they have found another way to hold it up and make the engineering invisible? Isn't the whole point of Levitating Mass to create the illusion of a rock floating in space?
