The Indie on Demand Movie Review will be a short, weekly audio series in which I'll take a look at a film that has recently become available via on-demand platforms. This week, I'm looking at Return, the debut feature from director Liza Johnson.
Return, starring Linda Cardellini, is a haunting new movie that tweaks and twists the familiar subject of a soldier's return from war. It was selected for Director's Fortnight at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival, the only American film to be so honored in 2011.
Return is honest and downbeat, a movie with no revelations but still some painful truths to share. In a bigger movie, Cardellini might be experiencing a break-out moment. As it is, she does outstanding work in a smaller film.
What's it like to come back to the U.S. when you're not only a soldier but a wife and mother? Return stars Linda Cardellini assuch a woman who faces the daunting challenge of coming home.
