UK government delays hacker extradition deadline

AP | Posted 10.26.2009 | Home

LONDON — The British government says it will consider new medical evidence before approving the extradition of a computer hacker wanted in the U.S. on charges of breaking into military computers.

U.S. prosecutors accuse Gary McKinnon of hacking into dozens of computers shortly after Sept. 11, 2001. McKinnon says he was looking for evidence of UFOs.

This month, Britain's High Court ruled the 43-year-old should be extradited. The government gave him two weeks to appeal to the European Court of Human Rights.

McKinnon's lawyers say he has a form of autism and is at risk of suicide if extradited.

Home Secretary Alan Johnson said Monday he had "stopped the clock ticking on the representation to the European Court" because of new medical evidence about the autism.

Retail gas prices nearing summer highs

AP | DIRK LAMMERS | Posted 10.26.2009 | Home

— Retail gas prices are spiking to levels last seen in the heat of summer driving season, raising fears that consumers could cut back on holiday spending.

But the crude rally propelling the jump at the pump hit the brakes Monday, as a barrel of oil tumbled more than 2 percent as the dollar strengthened after hitting a 14-month low.

The average price for a gallon of regular gasoline rose for the 13th straight day, adding sixth-tenths of a cent overnight to $2.671, according to auto club AAA, Wright Express and Oil Price Information Service.

That's still below what drivers were paying at this time last year, but the 20-cent, two-week jump could prompt consumers already dealing with a climbing unemployment rate, depreciating home prices and damaged 401k accounts to spend less over the holidays, said Ryan Sweet, a senior economist with Moody's Economy.com.

"If they're spending more money at the pump, they're going to be less willing to go out to the malls to spend frivolously," Sweet said.

US Olympic official appointed to key London post

AP | Posted 10.26.2009 | Home

LONDON — Veteran U.S. sports executive Doug Arnot can add overseas experience to his resume after being given a leading role in the 2012 London Games.

Arnot was appointed Monday as director of games operations by London organizers looking to benefit from his experience helping run two Olympics in the United States.

He will be responsible for overall planning, coordination and delivery for the London Organizing Committee of the Olympic Games, or LOCOG.

"Joining LOCOG is another fantastic chapter in my life and I cannot wait to get started," said Arnot, who was also operations chief for Chicago's failed bid for the 2016 Olympics. "London 2012 is a unique challenge and one I could not pass up."

Arnot was an executive vice president of the 1994 World Cup in the United States before becoming managing director of venues and operations for the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. He then served as managing director for event operations at the 2002 Winter Games in Salt Lake City.

Michael Jackson's personal items to go on display

AP | MARESA PATIENCE | Posted 10.26.2009 | Home

LONDON — The official exhibition of rare Michael Jackson memorabilia will go on display in London this week.

The exhibition is a documentation of his musical legacy, said curator Robert Santelli. The show, starting Wednesday at the O2 Bubble arena, will feature Jackson in his many guises, including his roles as stylist, dancer and lyricist.

Some of the memorabilia includes the late singer's navy blue Rolls-Royce, a selection of his trademark gloves and sequined jackets and a contract from his early days with the Jackson 5. Another jewel of the exhibition is the design and patent for the shoes he invented for the lean dance move that he does in the "Smooth Criminal" video.

Potentially the most interesting part of the exhibition is the Neverland room, a shrine to Jackson with a fantasy painting of him being knighted and another depicting him wearing royal garb, as well as an ornate throne of red velvet and gold.

The exhibit is timed to coincide with the release of a posthumous album and a movie consisting of rehearsals for his ill-fated "This is It" comeback performances in London. The sold-out shows were canceled after Jackson's sudden death in June.
