Thieves target mourners at California graveyard

AP | Posted 05.25.2011 | Home

Thieves are preying on mourners at a cemetery in Southern California.

Purses, laptops and other valuables are being taken from the unlocked cars of grief-stricken people attending mortuary and graveside services at Rose Hills Memorial Park in suburban Whittier.

There have been 26 thefts from cars at the 1,400-acre hillside graveyard so far this year. There were 11 in all of 2008.

Rose Hills officials and the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department are warning people to lock cars and leave valuables at home. Deputies are now patrolling the cemetery and distributing warning fliers.

Rose Hills visitor services manager Richard Hardy notes the cemetery is in the sprawling Los Angeles urban area and "whatever happens outside, happens inside a cemetery."

Oldest woman to give birth dies, leaving twins

AP | DANIEL WOOLLS | Posted 05.25.2011 | Home

A Spanish woman who deceived a U.S. fertility clinic about her age and become the oldest woman to give birth has died at 69, leaving behind 2-year-old twins, newspapers reported Wednesday.

Maria del Carmen Bousada gave birth in December 2006 after telling a clinic in Los Angeles that she was 55, the facility's maximum age for single women receiving in-vitro fertilization. Guinness World Records said the 66-year-old was the oldest on record to give birth and the case ignited fierce debate over how much responsibility fertility clinics have over their patients.

Bousada told an interviewer at the time that the Pacific Fertility Center did not ask her for identification, and maintained that because her mother had died at 101, she stood a good chance of living long enough to raise her children.

Dr. Vicken Sahakian, director and owner of the clinic, said Bousada falsified her birth date on documents from Spain.

When he learned of the deception, "I figured something might happen and wind up being a disaster for these kids, and unfortunately I was right," he said.

FTC, 18 states act to stop sham loan consultants

AP | JACOB ADELMAN | Posted 05.25.2011 | Home

Prosecutors nationwide filed 189 legal actions Wednesday against loan modification consultants accused of bilking homeowners who are desperate to make their mortgage payments more affordable.

The lawsuits and cease-and-desist orders announced by Federal Trade Commission Chairman Jon Leibowitz and California Attorney General Edmund G. Brown were part of a nationwide sweep of alleged sham consultants by the federal agency and officials in 18 states.

Leibowitz used the announcement to put scam artists on notice and urged homeowners to protect themselves from being exploited.

He said fraudulent loan modification consultants are "full of hollow promises designed to fatten the pockets of criminals and con men."

The lawsuits filed by the FTC included allegations that Aliso Viejo-based Lucas Law Center persuaded distressed borrowers to stop paying their mortgages in order to pay the firm's fees of up to $3,995.

A Spanish woman believed to have become the world's oldest new mother when she gave birth at age 66 has died, leaving behind twin toddlers, newspapers reported Tuesday.

Maria del Carmen Bousada, who reportedly died Saturday at age 69, gave birth in December 2006 as a single mother after getting in vitro fertilization treatment.

She told an interviewer she lied to a California fertility clinic about her age, and maintained that because her mother had lived to be 101, she had a good chance of living long enough to raise a child.

Bousada's death was reported by the newspaper El Mundo and Diario de Cadiz. Cadiz is the southern province where Bousada lived her whole life.

Diario de Cadiz quoted her brother, Ricardo Bousada, as confirming her death but refusing to disclose the cause. The newspaper said she had been diagnosed with a tumor shortly after giving birth.

Prosecutors nationwide are filing 189 lawsuits and cease-and-desist orders against loan modification consultants accused of bilking desperate homeowners.

Federal Trade Commission Chairman Jon Leibowitz and California Attorney General Jerry Brown announced the legal actions Wednesday in Los Angeles. They are part of a nationwide sweep of sham consultants conducted by the FTC and 23 states.

The California attorney general's office says the five Superior Court lawsuits it filed in Orange and Los Angeles counties include allegations against 21 individuals and 14 companies.

The lawsuits seek millions of dollars in civil penalties, restitution for victims, and a permanent injunction to keep the companies and the defendants from offering mortgage-relief services.
