NEW YORK — Michael Jackson has a chance to win artist of the year posthumously at the American Music Awards.
The pop superstar, who died on June 25, was among a diverse group of artists nominated Tuesday for the top honor. Country star Taylor Swift, rapper Eminem, breakthrough rockers Kings of Leon and flamboyant pop star Lady Gaga were the other nominees.
Swift topped all artists with six nominations. She drew inadvertent attention at the MTV Video Music Awards last month when rapper Kanye West interrupted her acceptance speech to say Beyonce deserved the award instead.
Jackson followed Swift with five nominations and Eminem received four.
Winners are determined by an online vote of fans and will be announced at a Los Angeles ceremony televised by ABC on Nov. 22. The nominees were selected through a measurement combining sales and radio airplay.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Taylor Swift says she is "absolutely walking on a cloud" over her six nominations for the American Music Awards.
"I've never been nominated six times for any award show," the country star said Tuesday before a benefit concert in Nashville. "This is just such a wonderful day for me."
Her tally, announced on Oct. 13, even beat late superstar Michael Jackson, with five nods and rapper Eminem, with four.
"It's the 13th today, and 13 is my lucky number, and that's when I found out about the AMAs. It's like, I swear, good things happen on the 13th for me, and I can't believe all those nominations."
The 19-year-old is up for the AMA's big award, artist of the year, alongside Jackson, Lady Gaga, Eminem, and rock band Kings of Leon.

LA CANADA FLINTRIDGE, Calif. — A powerful fall storm packing strong winds and rain eased Wednesday without causing the widespread mudslides and debris flows that California residents had feared.
The storm delivered its biggest punch to northern and central areas, knocking out power to nearly 700,000 utility customers from Bakersfield in the southern San Joaquin Valley to Eureka on the north coast.
A mandatory evacuation order remained in effect for residents of about 40 homes in central coast mountains near Watsonville, east of Monterey Bay, due to mudslides, said Chris Hirsch, a spokeswoman for Santa Cruz County emergency services.
A house in Corralitos was left surrounded by mud that buried cars up to their windows and a basketball hoop up to the net.
A dozen other homes were isolated because fallen trees and debris blocked roads.

LOS ANGELES — Residents across California worried Tuesday about possible flash floods and mudslides as a storm began showering areas devastated by wildfires.
Sandbagging and other preparations were being made in neighborhoods under threat, including Santa Barbara County and the Los Angeles-area foothills. The rains began before dawn across much of the state but were expected to intensify in the evening and into Wednesday.
"It's something we prepare for every year," Los Angeles County fire Inspector Frederic Stowers said. "We know the fires go through and do a lot of damage. Within L.A. County, much of the slopes burned are going to be critical."
People living around burn areas near the 250-square-mile Station Fire in Angeles National Forest were warned to brace for possible flows of mud, ash and debris with rainfall of up to 4 inches. Los Angeles County's average rainfall for October is less than half an inch.
The Pacific storm was expected to drop 3 to 6 inches of rain in Santa Barbara County, where an 8,700-acre fire burned in May, before it moves on to the San Gabriel Mountains, where the U.S. Geological Survey recently warned of massive debris flows near the areas burned in September.
