If Hasan's faith is ultimately proven to be the misguided inspiration for his violence, then the brave and patriotic service of thousands of Muslim American soldiers renders him an isolated and aberrant exception.

When a couple of white kids shoot up a school, it is a tragedy. Bring on a shooting at a military base that involves an Arab-American though, and the media does everything it can to shout "terrorism."

I spoke today with a friend who is a Muslim soldier stationed at Fort Hood. He and Hasan prayed side-by-side at the mosque the morning of the massacre. He agreed to share his story with me if I granted him anonymity.

Hasan may not have plotted against any particular soldiers, but he clearly planned the murderous rampage at Fort Hood.
