When we were given Athena's photo from her orphanage in the same week that you discovered your pregnancy, we crossed the Rubicon. Yes, of course (says every parent in America), having children changes you in a ways that are so unpredictable as to be surreal.
I used to tell people that ours was an easy marriage, that for some inexplicable reason, we had been given the cosmic gift of being able to love each other easily and well. And on some level, it's true.
We expect that our children will grow to resemble us, in looks and in actions. Our son has my husband's soul, our daughter has my spirit; they both have his eyes. But I never expected to grow to resemble him. Or him me. And it is this change that is the most surprising of all.
