The thought of seeing a one-person show always makes my heart sink a little. I feel as if I'll have to work for my pleasure instead of sitting back and surrendering to some grand, mindless entertainment. Still I go, and never expect what I often find.
Saturday's episode of Smash, titled "Opening Night," showcased the premiere of Bombshell. Our beloved Marilyn musical has finally opened on Broadway and it's a glorious accomplishment for all parties involved.
I'm sorry Smash didn't morph into a "smash hit," but the showrunner has announced that all of season two will be shown and the finale will be satisfying to the show's fans. To be honest, I'm still hoping for a third season which this program deserves.
In a night of spectacular entertainment, taking the stage were Matthew Morrison (Hairspray, Fox-TV's Glee), Melissa Etheridge, Stephanie J. Block (Wicked), Queen Latifah, and Megan Hilty (Wicked, 9 to 5: The Musical, NBC-TV's Smash).
Last year, "Smash" fans and critics complained, cajoled and hate-watched, and despite the barbed nature of that last pastime, a good chunk of the grousing sprang from a sincere desire to see the show do better. Be careful what you wish for.
