I actually like negative ads. I know this might seem counterintuitive, given that negative ads suffer from so many shortcomings critical thinking-wise. But negative ads at least present an argument.
Given the impoverished state of American literacy, is it any wonder that negative political ads, so filled with half-truths, misleading statements and boldface lies, have had such an impact on millions of adults?
Unless the declining trend of the daily newspaper is dramatically reversed so that journalists can adequately police political dialogue, truthful negative political ads can play a valuable educational role for inattentive voters.
