With the encampments folding or forcibly shut down -- for reasons of public health or winter weather -- and with eulogies already appearing, what next for the earthquake known as Occupy Wall Street?

Until this president stops calling Wall Street's deleterious actions "not illegal," he's failing to deter -- and therefore effectively encouraging -- future financial fraud.

The men and women who saved the nation from economic destruction and political tyranny, and went on to create the middle class and turn the United States into the strongest and most prosperous nation on earth, didn't do so simply by having the right values and working hard to achieve them.

In his ground-breaking speech in Osawatomie, Kansas, the president was telling the American people that he understands and shares their concerns, and that government has a responsibility to take those concerns seriously.

It was an up and down week for President Obama. His speech in Osawatomie, Kan. was an up, as he correctly identified the ways our political and economic system are rigged against the middle class as "the defining issue of our time." It would have been much, much better though if the speech had been given two years ago. On the other hand, his politically motivated cave-in on the Plan B morning-after pill was definitely a down (made worse by his claim that HHS Secretary Sebelius was the ultimate decider on this one). Memo to the president: the people who want to deny teens access to birth control are never going to support you -- no matter how many reproductive rights or cabinet members you throw under the bus. Finally, Obama had the quote of the week when, in response to GOP claims that his foreign policy is based on "appeasement," he replied: "Ask Osama bin Laden... whether I engage in appeasement."

President Obama seems to be finally realizing that the common good is as important as the profit motive.

It is fashionable in political circles today to say that speeches don't matter much. While I have a high degree of skepticism about politicians, and know painfully well how often they fall short of their words, I am of a different view.
