Class Illusions Revisited

Paul Stoller | Posted 03.27.2012

Paul Stoller

We like the myth of a classless society because it corresponds nicely to the stories we like to tell ourselves about the United States and the American Dream. For these reasons, the GOP spin on social divisiveness gets some traction in the public.

President Puts American Manufacturing Front and Center in State of the Union

We have to move to a "we are in this together" understanding of ourselves and our country if we want to bring back the shared prosperity we used to have.

When Fact Checkers Go Bad... Very Bad

Jared Bernstein | Posted 03.26.2012

Jared Bernstein

Politifact -- the self-anointed fact checkers -- graded a statement from the president's speech as "half-true." But the statement is not half true or even two-thirds true. It is just true.

Sunday Roundup

Arianna Huffington | Posted 05.25.2011

Arianna Huffington

At this week's State of the Union, President Obama succeeded in shifting the tone from "You Lie!" to what HuffPost's Howard Fineman called a "'Love Train' Moment." Hollywood should take note because no sooner were this year's Oscar nominations announced than the dirty politicking began, with charges that The King's Speech is historically inaccurate and that the sympathetic stuttering monarch at its center was actually a dim-witted Nazi appeaser. It used to be that we had to wait until an election year for negative campaigning, rumor-mongering, mud-slinging, and win-at-all-cost consultants. But, now, we get to be treated to these unseemly political staples every year come Oscar time. In past years, we saw similar mud being slung at A Beautiful Mind, and The Queen. What's next, rumors that Woody and Buzz from Toy Story 3 are secret lovers? The Academy clearly didn't get The New Civility memo.

There are two traits conspicuous in Obama no matter what the pressure of the occasion: He rarely explains complex matters with a complexity equal to the subject matter; and he hates to be a bearer of bad news.

That socialism's ideals are alive and well in the US today -- on both the left and the right -- makes it so amazing that they should continue to be so badly misrepresented.

The President Ignored the Elephant in the Room

The president's failure to address the decoupling of American corporate profits from American jobs makes reviving the nation's "competitiveness" seem somewhat beside the point but also cedes to Republicans the dominant narrative.

What Is President Obama's Sputnik Moment and What Is His Apollo Response?

William K. Black | Posted 05.25.2011

Obama declared that "this is our generation's Sputnik moment." But because he cannot tell us what "this" is, it's tough to use the metaphor to convince the nation that we should pay for the modern equivalent of a space race to address it.
