In 2006, we opened for drilling the Outer Continental shelf estimated to contain more than 40 billion barrels of oil. Oil prices were$60 a barrel then. In the two years since, prices have more than have doubled.

Though McCain's plan for offshore drilling will not ease the energy crisis, it is dandy patronage for the oil industry, who will be able to make nice profits from extracting and selling the 200,000 barrels per day.

It's hard to take much stock in whatever Bush has to say about oil or energy policy. His stance on this issue have always been entropic, misguided, and typically wrong.
