Those who rallied behind PEPFAR expressed a fundamental value -- that where you live should not determine if you live. As we look back on a decade of work, we can say proudly that those resources were not only effective, but transformational to individuals and communities alike.

Every Mother Counts is excited to be a founding partner of a new effort called Saving Mothers, Giving Life, which is doing just that. It's going into PEPFAR countries, building on that incredible infrastructure that has so effectively reached AIDS patients, and aiming to reduce maternal deaths by up to 50%.

This winter and early spring, when lawmakers are making big decisions about our course as a nation, we must act on science and on our humanitarian and diplomatic interests. We have the plan to end AIDS. Now is the time to fund it.

We visited Chikumbuso to see an example of successful U.S. foreign assistance firsthand. The women, and most of their children, who gather there each day are HIV positive.

By not providing "new" money towards maternal and child health, President Obama had in de facto pitted HIV/AIDS against other global health objectives.
