This year we celebrate the 40th anniversary of Title IX, which bars sex discrimination in publicly funded programs. It has increased girls' access to public education, extracurricular programs and, yes, athletics, for which it's best known.
While leadership is important at the highest echelons, we also need strong women at the community level. I'm encouraged by the programs here in Chicago that engage women as grassroots leaders.
One-day activities, demonstrations and short-term programs targeting highly-engaged students are not going to change who gets involved with science. Obama's "Educate to Innovate" does little to remove basic barriers.
