To know why the Israeli-Palestinian conflict has proved so intractable, it's worth reading the two op-eds published by the New York Times on March 13, in advance of President Obama's much-anticipated visit to the region.
Since 2002, Israel has been building a massive concrete partition in the Palestinian-controlled West Bank. Israelis call it the "security barrier." For Palestinians, it is the "apartheid wall."

Not that professor Rashid Khalidi of Columbia University needs my help, but I couldn't help staying quiet as the Republican smear machine picked on this... American of Palestinian origin.
The Washington Post asked the latest GOP bogeyman Rashid Khalidi, what he thinks of the current uproar. He wrote back briefly, "I will stick to my policy of letting this idiot wind blow over."
Jeez. Can somebody please tell these dorks to do their frickin' homework before they go on television? If one is the McCain Campaign National Spokesman, one should at least do that.
Khalidi is a big-time professor. Which is to say that, until quite recently, he was someone most of us had never heard of. But then John McCain picked Professor Khalidi's new Halloween costume.
