ReThink Review: Everything Must Go -- Will Ferrell Gets Serious

Jonathan Kim | Posted 07.11.2011 | Entertainment
Jonathan Kim

I thought Everything Must Go would be a hard sell with audiences, as fans of Ferrell's raunchy comedies are put off by the film's serious tone while drama lovers keep their distance, but there's a lot to like in this small, thoughtful movie.

ReThink Review: Thor -- Thorrible?

Jonathan Kim

Thor marks the official beginning of the summer blockbuster season -- and these days, that means comic books and superheroes.

ReThink Review: The Beaver -- On Puppets and Forgiveness

Jonathan Kim | Posted 07.05.2011 | Entertainment
Jonathan Kim

The Beaver is about a severely depressed man who develops an alternate personality that speaks to him and the world through a beaver puppet. A story like this would be a hard sell under any circumstances.

ReThink Review: Atlas Shrugged, Part 1 -- Who Is John Galt? And Who Cares?

Jonathan Kim | Posted 06.15.2011 | Entertainment
Jonathan Kim

Atlas Shrugged is like what would happen if The Da Vinci Code and the Twilight books had a baby, and then Republicans decided that baby should be the basis for running history's most powerful country.

ReThink Review: Your Highness -- Ye Olde Stoner Flick

Jonathan Kim | Posted 06.07.2011 | Entertainment
Jonathan Kim

Your Highness is certainly an original film for its genre, but is it any good, with or without the use of dangerous Schedule I controlled substances?

ReThink Review: Trust -- Parenting and Adolescence Online

Jonathan Kim | Posted 06.01.2011 | Entertainment
Jonathan Kim

David Schwimmer's film Trust is one of the most honest, impressive films about adolescence and parenting in the Internet age that I've seen.

Naturally, such a spectacular flop has caused furious head scratching as studio executives try to figure out what happened so future films can avoid a similar fate.

ReThink Interview: Julian Schnabel, Director of Miral (VIDEO)

Schnabel has succeeded in two fields that are notoriously difficult to making a living at: art and film. Now he has taken on a real challenge: making a movie about a Palestinian girl.

ReThink Review: Limitless -- Underachiever? There's a Pill for That

Jonathan Kim | Posted 05.25.2011 | Entertainment
Jonathan Kim

Limitless is a clever, exciting, surprisingly funny film where I honestly didn't know what would happen next.

ReThink Review: Mars Needs Moms -- Appreciate Your Mom, Or Else!

Jonathan Kim | Posted 05.25.2011 | Entertainment
Jonathan Kim

In Mars Needs Moms Milo's true journey isn't to the red planet and back, but to learn to appreciate the often thankless work of being a good parent.

ReThink Review: Vanishing On 7th Street -- When Dark Is Just Dark

Jonathan Kim | Posted 05.25.2011 | Entertainment
Jonathan Kim

I was pretty excited to hear about Vanishing on 7th Street, where a mysterious, living darkness descends on Detroit. It's a concept ripe for allegory. But it didn't work out that way.

ReThink Review: No Strings Attached -- Is the Romantic Comedy Dead?

Jonathan Kim | Posted 05.25.2011 | Entertainment
Jonathan Kim

Does No Strings Attached manage to rise above the morass? Or is it further proof that the romantic comedy is a genre that should be put out of its misery?

Why The Green Hornet's Kato Matters

Jonathan Kim | Posted 05.25.2011 | Entertainment
Jonathan Kim

The film's real star in The Green Hornet isn't Rogen, but Chou, and the importance of an Asian actor co-starring in a mega-budget American crowdpleaser should not be overlooked.

ReThink Interview: Charles Ferguson, Director of Inside Job

Jonathan Kim | Posted 05.25.2011 | Entertainment
Jonathan Kim

People interviewed in Inside Job claim that finance professionals deserve their money. But can someone rationally argue that someone earning $30 million/year works 1,000 times harder than someone earning $30,000/year?

Why A Charlie Brown Christmas Is Christmas for Me

Jonathan Kim | Posted 05.25.2011 | Entertainment
Jonathan Kim

I tend to be very careful about acquiring more stuff, especially at Christmastime. But does that make me anti-Christmas? If it does, what is Christmas?

ReThink Review: Tangled -- Are the Disney Princesses Good for Girls?

Jonathan Kim | Posted 05.25.2011 | Entertainment
Jonathan Kim

Are the Disney Princesses clean fun for girls, or are they anti-feminist propaganda that teaches girls to simply look pretty until Prince Charming arrives?

ReThink Review: Four Lions -- the Lighter Side of Jihad
