There was something happening out there -- mostly in New York, I gathered, as a little black girl growing up on Chicago's South Side in the 50s. I didn't understand it, but I could see and feel it, whenever I saw Ruby Dee on TV or the big screen.
Boris Kodjoe is charismatic, personable and knows how to work the room. He commands attention, but not in the "Hey, look at me!" kind of way. His swagger, his smile and warm, inviting demeanor make everyone take notice.
What does it take to be fab nowadays? A feathered mane, lux threads, a memorable look, and a banging resume. The ladies of today may know how to up the ante but being a glamorous woman of color is nothing new.
