The moment when Biden talked about the death of his wife and child, and raising his sons himself was tremendously moving and genuine. It was a bold -- and very relevant -- point to make.

Sarah Palin has experience being a runner-up -- which will come in handy in November. Tonight she barely kept up. By any rational assessment, Palin wasn't up to the job.

In Sarahland, answering questions asked to you is optional. You say what you want to say, regardless of what that old-school questioner has to offer.

Palin told Katie Couric "I'm not going to solely blame all of man's activities on changes in climate." The debate transcript reveals she still can't get her talking points straight on this issue.

Joe Biden did more for the equality of the sexes with his honest display of paternal emotion during the vice presidential debate than Sarah Palin's presence on the executive ticket has or will ever do.

Thursday's debate was a serious and substantive affair. With superb moderating by Gwen Ifill, the conversation stuck to policy-driven sparring, but the footage is already taking a different shape on YouTube.

Her performance wasn't the disaster that some in the GOP have been fearing. But cliché was piled upon cliché as Palin sought to paint Obama as a goofy radical who would end up running America off the rails.

Democrats shouldn't fall for the bait. The Obama campaign is once again in a strong position as Republicans struggle to deal with the economy. The debate comes at perfect time for Republicans.

During the debate, Biden's test is to pry Palin loose from her her lines and then underscore the emptiness or sinister implications of her stated views without appearing condescending or a lout.

What if, midway through, Palin is doing okay, or better than okay? If you're Joe Biden, are you going to just sit there and let her play you to a draw - or beat you? On the biggest stage Biden has ever been on, is he going to let himself get shown up by someone everybody knows is an idiot? Or does Biden get agitated, and start looking for opportunities to attack, to pin Palin down, to put her in her place? If Biden stops playing it safe, all bets are off. He might be brilliant, but things might also go horribly wrong.

In the debate rules, Sarah Palin will find her salvation. For while those rules govern the length that each participant may speak, nowhere is it written that Sarah Palin actually has to say anything.

Because Thursday's format allows for very little give-and-take between Palin and Joe Biden, her "values"-oriented debating style stands a good chance of succeeding.

If I were a McCain strategist, I would find any excuse to keep the bailout proposal from passing and send panic throughout the markets. Then, I would have my favorite presidential candidate ride in, dressed like a white knight.
