The interesting thing about these ideas -- the things we most desperately want out of life -- is that they are all functions of mind, and it's clear that the human species can eat, live and reproduce just fine in the complete absence of them.
Are the 15 minutes of fame afforded characters on "Jersey Shore" really worth our attention and time? Does "reality TV" provide more benefits than it does costs in terms of its ultimate influence on society and humanity?
Rather than simply trying to win something, enter the record books, or even cross a finish line, the idea of running a marathon now has much deeper meaning.
