Rape does not cause mass casualties in isolated, well defined incidents. Rapes do not seep invisibly over borders. Rape is, instead, a normalized aspect of everyday life.
Threats like this are not harmless expressions of free speech. They're akin to hate speech and are maliciously intended to intimidate and silence. Messages like this don't make women feel safe. And that's the point, isn't it -- to make sure our gendered safety gap stays constant.
Prior to the earthquake, the country already had some of the highest rates of violence against women in the world. In post-earthquake camps, girls and women are simply grabbed from their homes, taken from the streets, and raped by men either alone or in gangs.
