HuffingtonPost.com | Mike Ryan | Posted 01.23.2014 | TV

John Goodman hosted ‘SNL” last night for a remarkable 13th time (only Alec Baldwin, 16, and Steve Martin, 15, have hosted more), and the first tim...

Kerry Washington Helps 'SNL' Make A Point, But Will It Matter?

Mike Ryan | Posted 01.23.2014 | TV
Mike Ryan

Whelp, it's official ... this is officially one of the most troublesome seasons of "SNL" in recent history, even though it has nothing to do with the quality of the show. (Not that the quality has been great, but it's been OK considering all of the cast changes.)

Edward Norton Hosted The Best 'SNL' Of The Season (So Far)

Mike Ryan | Posted 01.23.2014 | TV
Mike Ryan

Edward Norton becomes the second "Moonrise Kingdom" cast member in a row who is not actively promoting anything to host "Saturday Night Live." And, hey, look at Norton up there: Charming his way through "SNL."

Did Bruce Willis Save The Day While Hosting 'SNL'?

Mike Ryan | Posted 01.23.2014 | TV
Mike Ryan

Bruce Willis had not hosted "SNL" since September 30, 1989. On that evening there was a "Thirtysomething" sketch and the fourth ever appearance of "Wayne's World." It's nice that Bruce Willis was promoting absolutely nothing, so in my own little fantasy world, I picture him waking up one morning and thinking "You know, I haven't hosted "SNL" in 24 years, I better get on that."

Miley Cyrus' 'SNL' Was All About Miley Cyrus

Mike Ryan | Posted 01.23.2014 | TV
Mike Ryan

The most successful hosts of late -- Justin Timberlake, Emma Stone, Christoph Waltz -- never try to make the show about them. They try to integrate themselves into the cast, basically becoming a cast member. The Miley Cyrus installment was mostly about Miley Cyrus. And, it's funny, in the few sketches that she wasn't playing herself or an exaggerated version of herself, she was good. Unfortunately, there just wasn't a lot of that.

Tina Fey Tries To Save A Shaky 'SNL' Premiere

Mike Ryan | Posted 11.29.2013 | TV
Mike Ryan

Soooo, yes, that wasn't the smoothest of transitions. Look, it's well documented that this is a transition year for "SNL." The show has six new cast members ... My point is ... give them a break.

Ben Affleck Bids Bill Hader & Fred Armisen A Fond Farewell

Mike Ryan | Posted 05.19.2013 | TV
Mike Ryan

As bittersweet as the undertones of the show were, it still played like your average installment of "Saturday Night Live." There wasn't an endless parade of Bill Hader and Fred Armisen's greatest hits. Instead, both men left as they arrived, standouts of the ensemble, without overshadowing the cast. A fitting sendoff.

Kristen Wiig's Greatest Hits Disappointed

Mike Ryan | Posted 05.12.2013 | TV
Mike Ryan

Less than a year ago, Kristen Wiig was given an emotional and touching graduation style sendoff from "SNL" that very few cast members ever receive. So, that's why it was a little weird seeing her "back in school" so soon. Pulling the same old tricks.

Zach Galifianakis Saves The Best For Last

Mike Ryan | Posted 05.05.2013 | TV
Mike Ryan

This week's Zach Galifianakis-hosted "SNL" felt at times that the cast was just sitting around waiting for the reaction to final sketch of the night -- which turned out to be one of the most ambitious sketches in recent memory.

A Great Monologue, Not A Great Show

Mike Ryan | Posted 04.14.2013 | TV
Mike Ryan

What an odd show this was. In that I can't remember the last time a host -- in this case, Vince Vaughn -- had that much energy during the monologue, yet the rest of the show felt so ... sluggish.

Melissa McCarthy Sells What She Was Given

Mike Ryan | Posted 04.07.2013 | TV
Mike Ryan

All of the elements for a truly terrific "SNL" were there -- great host, spirited audience, refreshed cast -- but it wasn't a terrific "SNL." It was a good show, fueled mostly by the physical efforts of host Melissa McCarthy, but, overall, the material wasn't there.

'SNL' Scorecard: Justin Timberlake Joins The Five Timers Club

Mike Ryan | Posted 03.10.2013 | TV
Mike Ryan

Justin Timberlake was, as always, a great "SNL" host and seems to actually be enjoying every minute he's on screen -- which was a lot, considering that Timberlake, including his musical performances, appeared in all but two segments last night.

'SNL' Scorecard: Kevin Hart Did What He Could

Mike Ryan | Posted 03.03.2013 | TV
Mike Ryan

Kevin Hart came with a ton of energy (perhaps too much at times), but the material was mostly second rate. It certainly wasn't a terrible show, but it wasn't a good or particularly memorable show, either.

The Best 'SNL' Of The Season

Mike Ryan | Posted 02.17.2013 | TV
Mike Ryan

Christoph Waltz was fantastic, which resulted in the best SNL of the season. Waltz is the type of actor who can do almost anything and it felt like there was a lot of saved up material, just waiting for a host that could do almost anything.

'SNL' Scorecard: Justin Bieber's Show Was All About Justin Bieber

Mike Ryan | Posted 02.10.2013 | TV
Mike Ryan

The entire show was about Justin Bieber -- and "SNL" is at its worst when the show is about the host as opposed to the host integrating him or herself into the cast.

'SNL' Scorecard: Adam Levine Does Double Duty (And It's Subpar)

Mike Ryan | Posted 01.27.2013 | TV
Mike Ryan

Adam Levine certainly didn't phone it in -- like we've seen other "SNL" hosts do this season -- but, like many a musical guest-turned-host before him, this just really didn't work out.
