The growing discontent with the NLD has been obvious inside Burma for most of the past decade. It came to light internationally when, during the November elections, desperate discussions were held about the official boycott.

Nobel laureate and Burmese democracy advocate Aung San Suu Kyi turned 65 today. She has spent 15 of the last 21 years in prison or under house arrest. There is no end to her, or her nation's, agony in sight.

Recent amnesties in Burma have been little more than public relations stunts. In September 2008, 9,000 prisoners were released, but only six of them were political activists.

The real question is who is responsible for the Nobel Laureate Aung San Suu Kyi's imprisonment? What can be done about it? What will anyone do?

The junta hopes that by making a token attempt at democracy it can convince the West to ease the sanctions it's imposed on Burma and re-open economic relations.
