There are other equally valid reasons, of course, to vote for President Obama on November 6, but these five are at the top of my list. Each, taken separately, strikes me as persuasive. Together I find them compelling.
We must never forget that there were Christians in World War II Europe, a small minority to be sure, who risked their lives to save Jews. And today there are Muslims who join forces with Jews and Christians to espouse and promote a spirit of tolerance.
The military-industrial complex phrase is nearly always quoted out of the context of the speech. Eisenhower was neither condemning nor praising the military-industrial complex. He was making a much deeper point.
If the main point of the meetings was to advance Obama's stated goal of increasing civic responsibility by getting Americans to talk politics with each other publicly, then the meetings were a success.
