It is time for local nonprofits to understand that marketing is the most essential component of your nonprofit. How are you to raise funds if you don't market or highlight your programming/initiatives?

As I walk down the streets of many inner city neighborhoods across the country, it always amazes me how many fried food restaurants I see compared to the amount of establishments where you can obtain a healthy meal.

People are looking far and wide for job creation and job placement programming that are effective. One of the most successful programs that I have ever seen was at a food bank of all places.

On August 7, 2010, the Optimum Institute of Economic Empowerment took to the streets to conduct the "Shape Up Your Finances" Economic Empowerment tour.

On July 10, the Optimum Institute of Economic Empowerment is taking a stand against filthy streets by organizing a community trash cleanup day on Fulton Street in New York.

I would like to commend Federal Correction Institution Otisville in Otisville, N.Y. for the tremendous work they are doing educating their population on ways to advance the economic progress of our society.

Recently, I had the privilege of seeing Manuel Gonzalez and Tyrell Peebles, two members of my youth economic empowerment group, graduate from college. I have seen them learn about financial literacy and help their communities.

Of the 2.7 million people in our prison systems across America, 63 percent will return within three years. That's why my nonprofit has dedicated October to the fight against recidivism.
