In the past, I have flirted with ideas of attending Lucinda Williams and Leonard Cohen shows in the same town, but each time concluded that the journey was just too long. Faithfull plays San Francisco or Oakland most every year. Is one more show really worth the bother?

The other day in one of my art classes I put on a Steely Dan CD. While the chorus of "Deacon Blues" drifted through the studio, I noticed one of my students singing along. I mentioned that I was impressed that he knew the song. He explained that it's one of his grandma's favorites.
My full expenditure for the Echoplex show was one 20-dollar bill, one utterly ruined page of notes in a brand-new notebook, one lost pen and approximately eight and a half hours of my life. But what I gained was worth a million lost pens.
