With over 30 years in this business, Joan Jett is still the queen of rock 'n' roll -- the humble queen of cool -- and America's rhythmic pulse beats stronger every day because of it.

I needed to find out whether the Rock 'N' Roll Pantheon is "for real," whatever that phrase has come to mean.

If, in fact, her personal life somehow hurts her standing with her young fans -- if the fans can no longer look up to her as a role model because she's a 22-year-old who got tired of one man and was tempted by another -- well, I'd say it's the best thing that could happen to her.

"You can't always lose yourself" in a role, says the 20-year-old Stewart, "although that's when it's at its best. I don't have a lot of control over it because I'm not really the best technical actor."

The Los Angeles punk music scene is at the center of The Runaways, which opened in limited release on March 19 and goes wider in a couple of weeks.
